The Finland–Canada Bonded Import Architecture

A Two‑Year International Genetic Selection and Verification Process

For nearly two decades, my preservation program has relied on the most rigorous, professionally controlled importation system in the Elkhound world. The Finland–Canada bonded pathway is not a simple transport method — it is a multi‑year, multi‑country genetic selection and government‑verified movement protocol designed to guarantee accuracy, identity integrity, and lineage correctness at every stage.

No other Elkhound breeder in North America uses this channel. I do — because my program demands absolute precision.

I. Two Years of Genetic Selection by Master Breeders

Every import begins long before a pup is even conceived. The Finnish master breeders — individuals with decades of working‑heritage expertise — must first evaluate and agree on the correct lineage to send to North America. This is a consensus process among masters, not a casual choice.

My role is limited to providing the genetic architecture I have already established here. They match their genetics to mine, ensuring continuity with my FullBlood restoration program.

This selection phase alone takes a minimum of two years.

II. Strategic Mating Planning and Quarantine Scheduling

Once the lineage is chosen, the mating is planned. Before the mating occurs, the kennel must schedule the mandatory 90‑day quarantine window required by the Finland–Canada bonded import system. This is coordinated with government veterinarians and export authorities.

The whelping is recorded, and the pup destined for my program is chosen by the master breeders themselves. I do not choose the pup — the masters select the correct genetic representative for North America.

III. The 16‑Week Mini International Desna Program

After selection, the pup enters the 16‑week Mini International Desna Program ( my contribution to the process, the Desna program is only for my pups) — the international version of my world‑class Desna mentorship. During this period, the pup is handled, trained, and evaluated by the best working‑dog professionals and mentors in Finland.

This phase ensures:

  • full three‑booster vaccination set
  • rabies vaccination
  • DNA identity verification
  • microchip confirmation
  • Finnish registration health protocols
  • temperament and working‑heritage evaluation

Only after completing this program is the pup eligible for Finnish Kennel Club registration and international movement.

IV. TRACES Certification and EU Passport Issuance

The pup is then entered into TRACES, the European Union’s government‑controlled animal movement system used for livestock, working dogs, and high‑value genetic animals. TRACES provides:

  • government veterinarian verification
  • identity logging
  • international movement authorization
  • chain‑of‑custody protection

The pup is also issued the EU Pet Passport, confirming identity, vaccinations, and export eligibility.

V. Government Veterinary Inspection and Transport

Within 48 hours of departure, a government veterinarian must complete the final export inspection. Because my dogs come from the northern Karelian district, the vet often travels at night — a 10‑hour drive to Helsinki — to meet the bonded courier and complete the inspection.

This level of dedication from the Finnish side is extraordinary.

The pup is then transported under bonded status, meaning:

  • sealed chain‑of‑custody
  • certified carriers
  • no private handling
  • government oversight

This is the highest standard of canine transport available.

VI. Arrival in Canada — Bonded Import and CFIA Verification

Upon landing in Vancouver:

  • the pup is not released
  • a bonded courier transfers him to a bonded kennel
  • CFIA is notified
  • all documents are re‑verified

The next day, CFIA performs the final inspection:

  • TRACES verification
  • passport verification
  • microchip verification
  • identity confirmation
  • compliance confirmation

Only after passing all checks is the pup approved for release, and I can take him home.

This is the most stringent dog‑importation and verification system in the world.

All hunting champions entered in Finland, the elite of the working Elkhounds.

VII. The Global Effort Behind Every Import

The sheer amount of dedication and commitment shown by the Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish breeders to provide me with the absolute best Elkhounds on the planet is beyond what most can fathom. The time, effort, planning, and coordination required for each import are immense — and unmatched anywhere in North America.

This process has proven its value in the offspring within my Kamia program. The genetic stability, health integrity, and working‑heritage excellence speak for themselves.

VIII. The Next Milestone — A FullBlood Norwegian Return Litter

If the mating occurs, I will soon have the first FullBlood female, Freya, producing a Norwegian return litter. This represents nearly 15 years of planning, coordination, and international stewardship.

It also marks the moment when brand‑new Norwegian Elkhound genetic material enters the North American gene pool for the first time in almost 150 years.

The work of all the global breeders, stewards, and clients is coming together. The restoration architecture is reaching its next historic milestone!
