Hunting with dogs in Alberta has brand new regulations and they are opening it up for hunters to utilize dogs to take along on the hunt to retrieve wounded big game.
Hunting Moose With Dogs
Alberta has new regulations for Hunting With Dogs and hunting Moose and Big Game has new rules.
Hunting Moose with dogs, meaning retrieval of wounded game is now allowed in Alberta and this also applies to all Big Game. So you are now able to utilize your Kamia Kennels Elkhound to hunt/retrieve wounded Moose, or Elk or Deer.
Hunting Deer with dogs in Alberta has also been expanded so you can utilize your Norwegian Elkhound, or Swedish Elkhound to hunt for the wounded big game, on leash after the shot in Alberta.
Jamthunds for hunting Elk or Moose in Alberta for retrieval of wounded game on leash after fire of first shot is now allowed. The dog can remain at the kill site while you dress out your animal to secure your area and keep you safe as well.
Dressing out big game in remote areas has always been a risk for hunters for predator animals approaching a hunter after a kill and this now keeps the hunter much safer as he can have his Elkhound with him while processing the animal. They will be utilized to find the game after shooting, and can remain at the kill site while you process so they can watch for bear that may approach.
Now the question comes to us all the time as to “When” they should take the dog on the first hunt. My advice is right away. Instincts are in pups. The sooner you wake the instinct up, the better the dog. I have pups out in the wild all the time. I have seen young pups tree a bear with an older dog many times and it is a natural procedure, instinctive behavior, does not in any way detract or impair the pup, but enhances it.
Hunting Moose has been done for centuries with the Full Blood Elkhound and Hunting with Dogs in now allowed in Alberta with the new regulations permitting the dog on lead after the shot to assist in retrieval of wounded game. This is a phenomenal advancement by the Alberta regulations to finally catch up to the rest of the hunting world in Scandinavian countries as dogs have been used there for ever. The Full Blood Elkhounds at Kamia Kennels are the very best working hunting dogs in the world.
Moose hunting legends have been selected as the bloodlines for our Full Blood lineages. Varella and Posso are both Imports from Finland. Both have incredible Champion hunting lineages. Posso’s mother the prolific Citi, is a Moose Hunting Champion in Finland.
We have great litters planned for Posso our Jamthund Stud Moose Hunting lineage. Aurella is now bred to Posso. Aurella is a daughter of Ark and Varella.
Both Posso and Aurella are from pure Jamthund lines that trace to the foundation start. They are the very best genetic’s the master breeders in Finland and Sweden carry to start the genetic pool of hunting dogs in Alberta.
We are expecting a litter in late August, very early in September. This is not a better Moose hunting dog in North America than the pups coming from this Jamthund pair.
Revna is going to be bred to Posso as well. Her father is the world famous Karu. An incredible hunting lineage out of the Karelian district of Finland. He has Norwegian Elkhound superstar dogs on both sides of lineage all the way back to foundation start. The Finnish Kennel Klub is the oldest of the three big Scandinavian clubs.
Revna is one of the very few Norwegian Elkhound dogs that trace to the Norrland bloodlines. She also has the famed Norway blood line of Moose hunting phenoms, two Nordic Champions in her background.
The mother of Revna was Luna, she carried the two Nordic Champions, which if you are just learning about the Norwegian Elkhounds used in hunt capacity, in the Scandinavian countries breeders can enter their hunting dogs into the competitions in more than one country. If a Moose hunting dog was to win a Championship status in each of 3 countries it is awarded the highest honor of Nordic Champion.
Two have two Nordic Champions in her background is incredible in and of itself. But her father also has one of the most prominent mothers in Finland, the Triple Champion Rittu. So she has been awarded Moose Hunting Champion, Bear Hunting Champion and Show Champion.
There are many more exemplary hunting dogs in her background and we will cover them in detail as our Hunting With Dogs Series expands.
A huge Thank You we send out to Gerald for sharing his great experiences with his Kamia Kennels hunting Norwegian Elkhound “Wolf”. What a Rock Star that boy is. Was on the hunt literally a few days after Gerald picked him up from me and I am so proud of how they have managed to get the maximum hunting capability out of that incredible dog. Hunting is a passion for Gerald and his family and having a dog on the hunt to retrieve game is so valuable.
Thank YOU Gerald! Awesome work, keep us posted!
