Seventeen Years of Stewardship: From Wyatt to Charlie

Some stewards come into a preservation program for a single dog. Others become part of its history.

For Ian and Allison Mockett and their family, their journey with Kamia Elkhounds began in 2009 when they welcomed Wyatt into their home. At the time, their children were young. Life looked very different. Like so many families bringing home a first dog, they could not have known that nearly two decades later they would still be sharing their lives with descendants of the Kamia program.

Wyatt, a son of Tora and Bram, became part of the family during those formative years. He was there through childhood adventures, school years, family milestones, and all the countless moments that make up everyday life. He lived a long, healthy life as a beloved companion and faithful member of the family.

When a family spends that many years with a dog, something deeper develops than ownership.

It becomes tradition.

It becomes part of the family’s identity.

So when Wyatt’s journey eventually came to its natural conclusion, there was an emptiness that only those who have loved a great dog truly understand.

Then came Charlie.

In one of the most thoughtful surprises imaginable, Allison flew to British Columbia last year to bring Charlie home as a surprise for Ian. Charlie is a Full Blood son of Ark and Karia, representing a new generation within the preservation program while carrying forward many of the qualities that have endeared Kamia Elkhounds to families for generations.

Allison flew out to get Charlie, surprise for Ian.

Today, as the family approaches their first anniversary with Charlie, it is clear that he has found exactly where he belongs.

As Allison recently wrote:

“Charlie is a wonderful boy, extremely smart and full of love. He’s found a special place in all our hearts.”

The photograph that accompanies this update tells a story all by itself.

Taken on the Mockett family farm in their maple bush area, it captures Charlie surrounded by the next generation of the family. Alyssa, Alexandra, Isabella, and Iden stand together with the young Full Blood male, creating a scene that could easily be mistaken for a photograph taken years ago with Wyatt.

Only the faces have changed.

The tradition remains.

Perhaps nowhere is Charlie’s bond more evident than with Iden, now thirteen years old. According to Allison, the youngest member of the family has developed an especially close relationship with Charlie.

That connection is one of the most meaningful parts of long-term stewardship.

The children who once grew up with Wyatt are now growing up with Charlie.

Two generations of Kamia dogs.

One family.

One continuous story.

Life on the farm suits Charlie perfectly. During the week he is a cherished family companion. On weekends he transforms into Ian’s shadow, accompanying him around the property while work gets done.

As Allison describes it:

“Charlie has become excellent off lead and spends his weekends running the farm while Ian works. Charlie always has his attention as to where Ian is, never straying too far.”

For anyone familiar with the breed, this description feels immediately recognizable. Independence balanced with loyalty. Confidence paired with attentiveness. The ability to roam freely while maintaining constant awareness of where their people are.

It is the type of relationship that cannot be created overnight.

It is built through trust.

Looking at this family today, what stands out most is not simply Charlie’s success in his new home. It is the continuity represented by the Mockett family themselves.

Seventeen years ago they entrusted us with Wyatt.

Today they are building new memories with Charlie.

The children who once learned what it meant to grow up with a Kamia Elkhound are now helping shape the life of another.

For a preservation breeder, there is no greater compliment.

Generations of dogs matter.

Bloodlines matter.

Pedigrees matter.

But what ultimately gives those things meaning are the families who carry the story forward.

Ian, Allison, Alyssa, Isabella, Alexandra, and Iden represent the very best of stewardship. Their home has given two Kamia Elkhounds the opportunity to live exactly the kind of life these dogs deserve: surrounded by family, trusted with responsibility, given freedom, and loved deeply.

Wyatt helped write the first chapter.

Charlie is writing the next.

And for everyone involved in the Kamia program, it is a privilege to watch the story continue.
