**Field Report – Rigel (Jaegar × Kamp)

Norwegian Elkhound Male – Desna Training Line Stewardship Family: Michele & Allan Age: 9½ Years – Exceptional Longevity & Condition**

Overview

Rigel remains one of the standout Desna-trained males from the Jaegar × Kamp pairing nine years ago. This line has always produced intelligent, emotionally stable, terrain-capable Elkhounds — and Rigel is the living proof of that architecture. At 9½ years old, he is still fully capable of a 4-hour hike, demonstrating elite longevity, structural soundness, and the mental clarity that defines the Kamp daughters and Jaegar sons.

Michele and Allan have provided superb stewardship over the years, and Rigel’s condition reflects that long-term consistency.

Physical Condition & Longevity

At nearly ten years old, Rigel is showing:

  • Strong frame and joints
  • Excellent cardiovascular endurance
  • No decline in mobility
  • High stamina for long-duration hikes
  • Clear eyes, sharp awareness, steady gait

A 4-hour hike at this age is not typical — it is exceptional. This is the same longevity pattern seen in the Jaegar line and the Kamp daughters: slow-aging, durable, structurally correct Elkhounds with long working lives.

Rigel’s build has always been impressive — broad chest, powerful hindquarters, and the classic northern gait. He has maintained that structure into senior years without the stiffness or fatigue common in lesser lines.

Temperament & Behaviour

Michele describes Rigel as:

  • Incredibly smart
  • Well-adjusted
  • Calm and confident
  • Easy to handle
  • Emotionally stable

This is exactly the Desna training profile — early off-leash work, handler bonding, and terrain intelligence that lasts a lifetime. Rigel’s mental clarity at 9½ is a testament to both genetics and stewardship.

Michele has one of the best big fella’s.

Terrain Work & Activity

Rigel continues to thrive in outdoor environments:

  • Fully capable of long hikes
  • Maintains pace and awareness
  • Reads terrain calmly
  • Works well with other dogs (Tessa the Lab)
  • Shows no signs of fatigue or overexertion

Michele prefers the shorter 1.5-hour walk near their home, but Allan and a buddy took Rigel and Tessa for the longer 4-hour outing — and Rigel handled it beautifully.

This is classic Jaegar × Kamp endurance: slow-burning energy, steady movement, and a working mindset even in senior years.

Environmental Transition

Michele mentioned:

“Not the Rockies but it’s where we live now!”

Rigel has adapted perfectly to their new region. While not the high-elevation Rocky terrain he trained in as a pup, he still applies the same terrain-reading instincts:

  • Scent mapping
  • Movement tracking
  • Controlled curiosity
  • Calm navigation

These instincts do not fade — they deepen with age.

Stewardship Assessment

Michele and Allan have done outstanding work:

  • Maintaining Rigel’s physical condition
  • Providing consistent outdoor activity
  • Supporting his mental engagement
  • Keeping him integrated with family and routine
  • Allowing him to continue working at his natural pace

This is exactly how a senior Elkhound should be managed — not overworked, not underworked, but given meaningful terrain time and steady companionship.
