Select a pup on the grandparents and related genetics.

Grandparents of your pup have influence beyond what is normally discussed. The parents of your pup have a very high influence but they are primarily a combination of all four sets of grandparents.

Great grandparents still influence instinct behaviors and traits even though it is less pronounced in the pup. Instinctive behavior goes back many generations, so this is why Kamia Kennels is very much a promotor of showing past generations.

A breeder than can show you past generations as well as related dogs, aunts, uncles, siblings etc. These are absolutely some of the best indicators of what your pup will develop into and behave like. The instinctive traits of past generations and related dogs will automatically show in your pup if breeding has been thoughtful and planned.

When searching for a pup after you have determined the breed that will match your lifestyle, it then comes down to selecting a breeder.

Your criteria should include generational research. Does the breeder have the ability to show you related dogs, such as the parents, the grandparents perhaps, or related dogs like siblings to your pups parents. How do these dogs compare and behave, are there “existing pups” from older generations. Can they show you past litters.

The related dogs and the generational impact is one of the most important criteria to getting a pup that will eventually be exactly, or very close to what you see when doing this research as they age.

As a breeder, here at Kamia Kennels I literally can show generational programs with many generations out in the terrain at one time.

This particular article will show case many generations of the same family of Elkhounds

Generations of Elkhounds It’s a very rare day to find a breeder with related dogs and or more than a generation. Here we showcase 4 generations out working together.

We are routinely have 4th and 5th generation pups now and have females going into the breeding program now that will be having 6th generation when they whelp.

Currently we have 4th generation pups on the ground from Vaeda and ARCO. This is 4th generation on both sides of the pairing. I have hiked thousands of miles with this genetic over decades. Some of my most filmed, most photographed lineage Elkhounds showcased in the ancestors of this amazing litter.

Vaeda’s brother Loki comes by now and then, he is with Seb and Carsen and they have a tremendous life with that big fella. Loki is also the brother to Varja who I discuss below. I’ll put a photo of him in.

Varja has a monumental litter in Montana this season as well as she whelped out 5 incredible Norwegian Elkhounds at Linda before Vaeda.

You can witness genetic displays all over our program as Odin is the full brother to Vaeda. He is the sire of the Varja litter. These are ancient Norwegian Elkhound bloodlines.
