Kamia Kennels is the ONLY Norwegian Elkhound preservation breeder in North America and they are preserving one of the most prolific bloodlines left in existence today. They have a range of superior preservation lineages all with excellent traits and health aspects, but one lineage is extremely valuable for the fertility aspect.
Prolific Norwegian Elkhounds
Preservation Norwegian Elkhound Lineage Is So Prolific!
Decades of females that continue, generation after generation that produce outstanding pups with large litters. They rebreed with no issues, have excellent carrying capacity and are very robust and healthy. The major aspect of this lineage is the ability to pass the fertility down to the next generation.
The litter on the ground today with Rita is 11 pups and she is doing an incredible job with them. No doubt they take some management and assistance, but Linda is fully qualified with decades of experience to help Rita manage such a large litter. Supplemental assistance is available, Rita gets the absolute best ration you can imagine. She is fed literally around the clock, as much as she would like to eat. The pups are on the ground, so they are getting grounded all the time. This helps keep them calm and relaxed. The natural fresh air is a wonderful thing for them.
Rita as well can come and go out of the pen and walk the yard, get a stretch, come and go, the pups are content. It’s 88 degrees in Montana, so Linda brought the rascals in during mid day, this is hot out, so they got some chill time in the cool laundry area for a few hours. Rita even joined in to lay on the cool floor.
Afternoon cool down the pups can be taken back out for the evening. Linda is doing an exceptional job, and Darrell is keeping an eye on the surroundings as well with the help of two incredible Norwegian Elkhounds, Tikka and Lil Griz. As some of you may know, Lil Griz is a daughter from Rita’s first litter a few years ago. Tikka is a relation to Rita also. We had expected Tikka to have a litter, but alas she did not catch, but anything that moves in the way of threat to Rita and the pups, Tikka will snuff it out. She is a watch dog and Lil Griz is no slouch either. Both those girls can battle to save the pups, believe me.
So Kai, the mother to Rita she was prolific, had 34 pups and her top litter was 9. The Grandmother to Rita, Tora, she had 34 pups as well, her top litter was 9. The Great Grandmother Mia was a powerhouse female as well with 10 as her top litter. So you can see the litters carry through, generation after generation.
If my thoughts are correct, I do believe Rita is on track to pass all three of them in total pups as she is on her third litter only. So she could have another, and very easily two more litters. Kai and Mia each had 5 and Tora had 4 litters.
We have Lil Griz from the first litter saved to the preservation breeding program. We are working out to get a highly prolific bloodline out of Norway for Lil Griz. She will begin breeding perhaps later this year.
As well we have Rovi and Caelidh. The same procedure will be followed with those two, a prolific preservation bloodline male will be brought which is totally diverse from them and we will with assistance from our co-breeders overseas and the master breeders there have some studs selected with impeccable background genetic makeups.
We are excited and happy for the folks getting the Rita pups, these are the very best Norwegian Elkhounds currently available in the USA and with the whelping in Montana the USA folks get to experience one of the most profound opportunities to get one of the oldest known genetic lines of Elkhounds in the world. Flawless preservation and working lineage.
Please reach out to us, if you are interested in this litter and some of our upcoming litters as well.
