Mjrn and Linnie are getting the absolute best raw diet we could imagine this winter. They are eating wild game with a ton of fat and it’s so rich in nutrition they are growing like crazy. These are Full Blood preservation lineage Elkhounds of the finest quality in the world and it’s fitting that they should be eating some Moose and Elk growing to the max.
I wanted to talk about the size of the cubes when feeding Elkhound pups, l want to say that this will apply to any of the Elkhound types, Full Blood, Swedish Elkhound, or Norwegian Elkhound. All of the pups eat the same and can literally eat the exact same amount. Check out Linda feeding the Rita litter with her incredible Million Views video too!
The cube size is important once you move from ground meat to cubed. Keep the cubes small so that can just crunch and swallow. Most pups will simply swallow so I make the cubes all fairly small.
Keep the ratio of fat in the ration fairly high, the colder the weather the higher the fat ratio as it’s easy to burn for fuel as they are young. I feed a lot when it’s cold and then give them additional fatty style bones for chewing and to work the teeth. Watch these two incredible Full Blood females off leash and you know how they are working on this ration.
Rib bones with tons of meaty fat on them are perfect. Once the bones are literally cleaned off you can throw them into a mature Elkhounds pen and they will finish them off. The pups will clean them, but leave them for chewing, but can’t eat them yet. I leave the rib bones long enough they can’t get it swallowed of course.
Pups of this caliber are the very best in the world, the genetics are extremely diverse and clean, very pure and so feeding this absolutely organic meat ration is flawless for health of the pup and maximum development. They have been on this ration for centuries so this is what they absorb, digest and develop on the absolute best.
I am not into roughage much for pups, it’s literally all meat and fat if possible and they will grow to maximum potential and develop incredibly well. The only other thing that you can add into the ration is frozen fish if you have it. Cube it same way. When you are feeding wild game, especially the fat Moose and Elk, Deer and they have been wild. They are full of the Omega fatty acids that are in the fish too. So a game rich diet is extremely beneficial even if you don’t have fish.
Interior Elkhounds, those found into the woodland regions are for centuries accustomed to a high percentage meat ration so do fabulous on this type of raw meat. All our lines carry a great deal of inland dogs with some genetics going back to coastal regions, but even the coastal types do extremely well on wild game as it supplies that essential oil, via fat they require. Coastal types require a bit more fat than inland Elkhounds.
For all types of Elkhounds the raw diet is the absolute best! Ge a hold of us as we have more of these great Full Bloods coming very soon!
