KAMIA KENNELS — FULL BLOOD ELKHOUNDS
BREEDING ANNOUNCEMENT: VARJA × POSSO
A Historic Full Blood Pairing for 2026
We are very pleased to announce the upcoming Varja × Posso Full Blood litter, a cornerstone pairing in our ongoing restoration of the ancient Northern Elkhound. This litter brings together three of the most important surviving working‑line ancestries:
- Norwegian Norway Ancient Lineage (Varja’s maternal line)
- Finnish working-line Elkhound (Karu’s contribution behind Varja)
- Swedish/Jamthund hunting-line (Posso’s paternal heritage)
This is a true restoration litter, designed with purpose, depth, and long-term genetic integrity.

THE DAM — VARJA
Varja is a true Norwegian Elkhound female, carrying one of the rarest remaining maternal lines from the old Norway working dogs. She is a daughter of Karu, the Finnish import who brought back the rugged, mountain-capable structure and deep endurance that defined the original Elkhound. Karu brings genetics never before in North America to Varja.
Varja is:
- Powerful, athletic, and balanced
- Calm, steady, and highly bonded
- A natural guardian with excellent judgment
- A snow‑terrain specialist, thriving in the deep winter conditions of our northern region
Her structure, temperament, and lineage make her one of the most important Norwegian Elkhound foundation females in North America today.
Varja’s mother was the famous Tekla, considered to be one of the very best Norwegian Elkhounds ever.

THE SIRE — POSSO
Posso is a Jamthund/Elkhound male from a pure hunting lineage, carrying the large‑frame, long‑range genetics that historically complemented the Norwegian lines. His ancestry traces directly to the Karelian District of Finland and Swedish working dogs tracing back to the Jamtland region, selected for stamina, grit, and intelligence.
Posso brings:
- Exceptional tracking and scenting ability
- A long, ground‑covering gait
- High intelligence with a cooperative working mindset
- Strong bone, deep chest, and classic northern silhouette
He is a key male in the restoration architecture, adding depth, diversity, and working capability. Posso’s genetics have never been in North America before he came either. This is an intensely diverse genetic match up that will provide some of the absolute best foundation Full Blood Elkhounds for the restoration of the Kamia Full Blood Elkhounds.

WHY THIS LITTER MATTERS
The Varja × Posso litter is a three‑line integration, strengthening the Full Blood foundation with:
- Ancient Norway maternal genetics
- Finnish endurance and structure
- Swedish/Jamthund hunting drive and size
This combination restores the original northern Elkhound phenotype:
balanced, powerful, intelligent, weather‑proof, and deeply bonded to their family.
This litter supports our long-term goal of building a stable, diverse, multi‑line Full Blood population for the next generation of stewards.

EXPECTED TRAITS IN THE PUPS
Families can expect pups with:
- Strong, athletic frames suited for mountain terrain
- Deep winter coats and excellent cold tolerance
- Calm, confident temperaments with strong family bonding
- High intelligence and problem-solving ability
- Natural guardian instincts without unnecessary reactivity
- Classic Full Blood structure: deep chest, tight feet, powerful hindquarters
These pups will be ideal for active families, acreage homes, and those who appreciate the heritage and purpose of the original Elkhound.

PLACEMENTS & STEWARDSHIP
This is a stewardship litter, and placements will be made with families who value:
- Preservation of the Full Blood lines
- Long-term commitment to the breed
- Active, engaged partnership with their dog
- Respect for the heritage and purpose of the Elkhound
We welcome inquiries from returning Kamia families and new families who share our vision for the restoration of the ancient northern working dog.
